WHO EXACTLY SHOULD BUY AN IPHONE 5?

Now that the excitement over the new iPhone 5 has probably settled, it is time to wonder about the most important question. Should you get yourself an iPhone 5?
Smartphones often get a new incremental model every year, but not everyone buys a new phone every year. I personally average one every 2.5 years. I spoke to some iPhone fans and critics alike and came up with a short analysis on who should actually go ahead and buy one.

Who should Buy the iPhone 5:

Current iPhone owners

iPhone 5 has a bigger screen and a much faster processor. The specs are great but it is not exactly a path breaking update from its previous version iPhone 4S.
  • If you have an iPhone 4 or its previous versions, then upgrading to an iPhone 5 is a great idea. The phone will be a big improvement from your current phone model.
  • If you are a iPhone fanatic and never miss an upgrade, then you should go right ahead and get a iPhone 5. Chances are you have already pre-ordered it.

Non iPhone owners

This one is a bit tricky, as a lot of Android phones have really caught up with iPhones. Android’s Jelly Bean (4.1) OS version is often cited as more advanced that iOS 6 from Apple.
  • Though Android 4.1 is as good as iOS 6 if not better, there is a big issue with fragmentation. If you own a Android phone and are sick of waiting for the latest OS versions being made available for your phone(usually they are at least 4-6 months late), then opting for a iPhone 5 will be a great idea.
  • If you are a BlackBerry or Nokia user but want to move towards touch phone with a great app market. Then chances are you will like upgrading to iPhone 5.

Who should Not Buy the iPhone 5:

Current iPhone owners

  • If you have an iPhone 4S, then you might not exactly find upgrading to iPhone 5 very exciting. The new iOS6 version along with improvements to SIRI are already available for the 4S version.
  • The iPhone 5 is an expensive device. In India, it will should cost about INR 44,000. Most popular smartphones from other companies are usually atleast 10% to 15% cheaper.

Non iPhone Owners

  • Android users who are really into customizing things on their phones, using their phone as a temporary disk drive will be better advised to not get a iPhone 5 which runs on a very closed system.
  • If you are big fans of the Android, BlackBerry or Nokia ecosystem, then it is better to avoid the iPhone 5.
I personally thought that the APPLE UNVEILS I PHONE 5: SOMETHING IS MISSING!!!, compared to it’s previous versions. I found iPhone 5 a great phone but not exactly a compelling device. So you will have to decide for yourself and see if you find the phone and its apps ecosystem very compelling. Buying a smartphone takes a lot of money, so make sure you buy something that you do not regret later.

Windows 8 Keyboard Shortcuts for Non-Touchscreen Users

Microsoft’s latest version of the venerable Windows operating system is Windows 8. Unlike many other previous releases, such as Vista and Windows 7, Windows 8 is a major refresh of the operating system and appears quite different than the previous few versions; the biggest revamping since Windows 95.
Touchscreen technology has taken off of late with the introduction of several tablet PCs and the ever-popular iPad, and Windows 8 is designed primarily for use with a touchscreen, be it a tablet or some of the fancier new machines that offer touchscreen monitors.
However, not every user that is planning to upgrade to Windows 8 or purchase a new system is going to have the capability or desire to use a touchscreen. Fortunately, Windows 8 have anticipated this scenario and have included a number of keyboard shortcuts.
Windows + PrtScn
Pressing the Windows button plus the Print Screen button will take a screenshot of what is currently on your machine’s screen, saving it to the hard drive as a .png file in the new Screenshots folder. Not pressing the Windows key will still take a screenshot, but will only copy the shot to the clipboard.
Windows + Z
In previous versions of Windows, clicking with the right mouse button would bring up an options menu for whatever program you were working in. The Windows + Z shortcut serves this same purpose.
Windows + Tab
This shortcut works similar to the familiar Alt + Tab shortcut, but works for Metro apps. Instead of switching between windows, it switches between apps listed on the left side of the screen.
Windows + D
Some people might prefer the older style Windows desktop. This shortcut is a quick way to get to a more familiar-looking desktop. To return to the Metro style desktop, one can simply press the Windows button by itself.
Windows + I
If you need to access the system options, this shortcut is definitely your friend. Also, Windows 8 defaults to putting your computer or tablet to sleep rather than shutting it down and powering it off. By using this shortcut, you will be able to find the hidden option to power the system down completely.
Windows + Full Stop/Period
Pressing Windows + Full Stop will snap the current Metro app to the right of the screen, locking it there and allowing you to continue working on the left side. This is particularly useful for keeping an eye on Twitter.

APPLE UNVEILS I PHONE 5: SOMETHING IS MISSING!!!

The big day finally arrived. The iPhone 5 was finally unveiled by Apple at an event in San Francisco, US. iPhone 5 has a lot of new hardware and some added features.
The iPhone 5 will in all probability, break all its previous sales records. It will increase the profits and revenues that are flowing into Apple. In a way the iPhone 5 is a safe bet.

iPhone 5 Features

  • The iPhone 5 will have a bigger 4 inch retina display screen. It will be weigh only 112 grams and with thickness at 7.6 mm it is the thinnest iPhone ever.
  • A6 processor which Apple claims is 20% faster than A5.
  • The primary camera is 8 megapixel with Panorama and Autofocus. The front camera is a HD camera which would be useful for Facetime.
  • The phone will ship with iOS 6. It will include features like Facebook integration and also more importantly in-built Maps app which will replace Google Maps.
  • Availability: The phone will start getting shipped form 21st September. The pre-order bookings begin from 14th September onwards.
  • Prices for iPhone 5: $199 for 16GB, $299 for 32GB and $399 for 64GB

Where is the magic?

People expected a phone that was taller and also slimmer. It was expected to have no NFC support and a slightly wider display screen. Apple did not disappoint and all rumours about the phone were indeed real. The only problem was there was nothing really surprising about iPhone 5. The changes to the phone were predictable.
Apple had this uncanny knack of focusing on the future. It bet on the iPhone, even at the risk of overshadowing it’s own successful iPod back in 2007. It did the same with iPad by reinventing a gadget which previously thought to be just a small niche product.
But today Apple is in a different place. It is now the world’s most valued company. It was the iPhone which made Apple all those billions in profits. It seems like Apple is scared to do anything radically different with it’s most popular product. It is now behaving like any other large technology company with a super-duper hit product or service.
It sort of reminds me of a Microsoft in the late 90s which was too scared to change things with Windows at its height or even a Nokia which refused to see the touch-interface as the future 5 years ago.
The magic that marks the difference between a good product and a compelling product is missing with the iPhone 5. That magic had a name and it was Steve Jobs.
What are your views on the iPhone 5?
